"Join the Breton Democratic Union's call

The President's words about the Breton identity of Nantes are not without ulterior motives and obviously embarrass socialist leaders, among them the mayor of Nantes.

Yet, those words, coming from the head of state, give a great importance to the Breton unity question, justifying thereby the struggle of all those who have fought for reunification.

At the same time, however, the Balladur Committee works on a reformation of local authorities and a redrawing of administrative boundaries we fear will not answer our demand of a five departments Brittany.

We want an integrally reunified Brittany endowed with the same powers as euro-regions' such as Catalonia, the Basque Country or Scotland.

Naar jaarlijkse gewoonte reikt L² tijdens de zomer zijn politieke wielertruitjes uit. Deze gaan naar politici die zich volgens de jonge links-liberalen het voorbije jaar hebben onderscheiden in een aantal categorieën, zoals in de Ronde van Frankrijk. Principieel komen politici van VlaamsProgressieven niet in aanmerking voor deze truitjes.

De gele trui, voor beste politicus, gaat naar Rudy Demotte. L² apprecieert de toekomstvisie van de Waalse minister-president. Hij is niet alleen de eerste minister-president van de Franse Gemeenschap en Wallonië samen, maar heeft ook een uitgesproken post-Belgische visie waarin samenwerking tussen de deelstaten centraal staat.

De beste politicus in moeilijke omstandigheden krijgt de bolletjestrui. Deze gaat dit jaar naar Bart Staes. Het Groen!-parlementslid waagde een gooi naar het voorzitterschap van zijn partij. Hij ondertekende het Gravensteenmanifest, ondanks het feit dat zijn partij zich steeds meer terugplooit op België. Daarenboven is Staes een goed parlementslid in een niet altijd even sexy assemblee.

De witte trui, voor meeste beloftevolle politicus, wordt toegekend aan Jean-Jacques De Gucht, 's lands jongste senator. Hij zette het thema van een menswaardig levenseinde voor iedereen, inclusief minderjarigen, opnieuw op de agenda. Daarnaast slaagt hij er in om als senator van zich te laten horen.

De groene trui, voor de grootste opportunist, gaat zonder enige twijfel naar premier Yves Leterme. Geen enkele deadline werd gehaald en van goed bestuur kwam helemaal niets in huis. Leterme kiest resoluut voor zijn eigen postje en sleept het land daardoor van crisis tot crisis. De jonge links-liberalen hekelen verder zijn gebrek aan visie, dialoog en doorzettingsvermogen.

Over 10000 demonstrated last Saturday to demand the reunification of Brittany (the Loire Atlantique’s department is not part of the administrative region of Brittany since 1941), but also to demand rights for the Breton’s language and more powers for the region.
The Breton Democratic Union (UDB) was very noticable in the demonstration. More than 250 of its members and at least the same number of supporters protested in different groups (from elected people to the association of “Bretagne Réunie”). A yellow wave to demand the real recognition of Breton culture and a real power to save it.

This demonstrators were really young, which is a very good news for the cultural movement. The UDB was the biggest party to be represented. The Youth of UDB chanted slogans like “we want it, we’ll have it, reunification”, “from Brest to Clisson, one Breton people”, “justice for Breton”, “one solution: autonomy for Brittany”…

Nantes will not forget the 20th September 2008, even if the newspaper wrote that only 6000 people attended the protest! With the pipebands and dancing, Nantes won, on Saturday at least, its nickname as the capital of Brittany. EFAy Bureau Member and demonstrator, Gael Briand told the EFAy Bureau this weekend:

"...it's such a good thing that youth of Brittany participated to this demonstration! It means that the cultural movement is getting younger so it's good news for the future... it was also a great success for UDB and UDBy..."
